Difference Between Galvanized and Stainless Steel Pipe

1. Chemical Composition

Galvanized tubes are coated with a layer of zinc on the surface of carbon steel. While stainless steel tubes are composed of iron, carbon, and at least 10.5% chromium content. Therefore, there is a clear difference between them in terms of chemical composition.

2. Applications

Both galvanized and stainless steel pipes can be used in corrosive environments. However, galvanized steel pipe is generally used in water or wet environments, such as metal roofs on houses, and chain-link fences. Since stainless steel is more expensive and durable, it is often used in medical, food, light industrial, and some other high-end products.

3. Strength

Stainless steel pipes are significantly stronger than galvanized pipes. This is because the rust-proof coating on the outer layer of galvanized pipe wears off over time. While stainless steel pipe contains chromium, which helps prevent rust and is stronger.

4. Service Life

Over time, the zinc coating on the surface of galvanized steel pipes wears away until it is consumed. Stainless steel pipe, on the other hand, offers better performance. Its entire components are corrosion resistant, so it can last longer in the same service environment.

5. Price

Although the price of steel in the market is always changing, the price of stainless steel pipe is still much more expensive than that of galvanized pipe. This is because galvanized pipe is easier to weld and form compared to stainless steel pipe. Stainless steel pipe is more expensive to produce and therefore more expensive.

Which Rusts Faster, Galvanized or Stainless Steel Pipe?

Like all pipes, galvanized and stainless steel pipes will inevitably rust after a long period of use. But which one rusts faster?

Generally speaking, stainless steel tubes are more resistant to corrosion. In the manufacture of stainless steel pipe, chromium component is added to make stainless steel pipe more corrosion resistant. As a result, it does not rust easily even in harsh environments. While galvanized steel pipe is only protected by the zinc coating. After a period of use, the coating starts to slowly peel off and the steel pipe will start to rust. Normally, galvanized steel pipe rusts faster than stainless steel pipe under the same user environment.

Which One Is Right for Me?

When choosing a steel pipe, you may encounter a dilemma, which one is more suitable for you? Next, Wanzhi Steel offers some tips for you.

1. Choose According to the Use Environment

When choosing steel, you need to determine the environment in which your project will be used. Usually, galvanized pipes are often used in construction, machinery, coal mining, the chemical industry, etc. And stainless steel pipes are widely used in medical, food, plumbing, and furniture, and kitchenware.

2. Choose According to Your Budget

When you choose a product, it is best to stay within your budget. If you are on a tight budget, then galvanized pipe is a good choice. Although it is not as rust resistant as stainless steel pipe, it is very cost-effective.

3. Consult A Professional

If you don’t know how to choose, a professional can often provide you with better advice. Wanzhi Steel, for example, has 17 years of industry experience and is qualified to advise you on your project.

Both carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe are popular for a wide variety of applications. They are both made with carbon, iron and some other elements. But they have different features, for example, appearance, corrosion resistance, service life, price, etc. Below let’s review the main differences between them.

Carbon Steel Pipe in China

Carbon Steel and SS Pipe

Carbon Steel and SS Pipe

1. Ingredients

Carbon steel pipe uses carbon steel as raw material, which is mainly made of iron and 0.12-2.00 percent carbon. While stainless steel tube uses stainless steel as base material, which contains iron, carbon, and at least 10.5% chromium content.

2. Anti-corrosion Properties

Stainless steel contains a large amount of chromium. Chromium reacts with oxygen and then forms a passive layer to protect the steel from corrosion. While carbon steel pipe will rust easily. But carbon steel is known for its strength and ability to withstand very high temperatures. You can choose suitable tubes according to the use environment and the expected service life.

3. Price

Comparatively speaking, carbon steel pipes are more affordable than stainless steel pipes. But SS tubes are more long-lasting and corrosion resistant. In the long term, SS tubes will be more cost-effective. You can choose according to your budget and the use environment.

4. Appearance

In terms of appearance, stainless steel tube has a very shiny surface. It retains its luster even when exposed to weather and other elements. Carbon steel pipe is darker in color and has a matte appearance. If carbon pipe is exposed to harsh environments, it will deteriorate in appearance with corrosion.

Which One Is Better, Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel Pipe?

If you are torn between choosing carbon or stainless steel pipe, you can ask yourself the following questions.

1. Are Your Pipes Used At Extreme Temperatures?

Carbon steel pipe can withstand high temperatures and is suitable for use in steam pipes and other applications. However, if your project is in an extremely cold environment, carbon steel pipe will be not an ideal choice. You can choose 304 stainless steel pipe, which is resistant to low temperatures up to -196 degrees Celsius. While SS tube can also withstand high temperatures. Therefore, it is also widely used in kitchen items.

2. Do You Want to Use the Steel Pipe in the Food Industry?

If your project is related to the food industry, stainless steel pipes will be more recommended. The reaction of carbon steel with food can change its taste or may cause health problems. While stainless steel pipes are found everywhere in the food industry and do not affect human health.

3. Will the Steel Pipes Be Used in Corrosive Environment?

Corrosion will greatly influence the service life of your pipeline. In corrosive environments, such as chemical industry, marine, humid surroundings, stainless steel tubes or galvanized steel tubes will be more durable to use and also easier to maintain.

4. How About Your Budget?

Carbon steel pipe is a low cost and affordable option. If you have a tight budget, then carbon steel pipe may be a good choice. But stainless steel tubes are durable to use. In the long term, SS pipes are more cost-effective. So please remember, do not rely on the price only. Welcome to contact us for more professional tips.

The Difference Between Cold Drawn and Hot Rolled Tubes

1. Processing Method

From the processing point of view, hot-rolled tubes are made by hot processing, while cold-drawn tubes are made by cold processing. Hot rolling is rolling at a temperature higher than the recrystallization temperature, and cold rolling is rolling at a temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature. Therefore, they are processed differently from each other.

2. Application

Hot rolled steel pipe is used for fluid transportation, mechanical structures, and other occasions with low dimensional requirements. And cold rolled steel pipe is generally used for equipment, hydraulic systems, pneumatic, and other demanding occasions.

3. Price

The manufacturing process of cold drawn tubes is more complex than that of hot rolled tubes. Cold drawn tubes are rolled several times, while hot-rolled tubes are much simpler to manufacture. Therefore, the price of cold-drawn tubes is relatively high. According to the price in the market, the price of hot-rolled steel pipe is about 30-75 USD per ton lower than that of cold-drawn pipe.

4. Dimension

Hot rolled steel pipes are usually of large diameter, while cold rolled steel pipes are usually of small diameter. The former usually has an outside diameter greater than 32mm and a wall thickness of 2.5 to 75mm, while the latter can reach a diameter of 6mm and a wall thickness of 0.25mm. you can choose according to the specific size required for your project.

5. Appearance

The surface of cold rolled pipe is bright and the size of the caliber is smaller than that of hot-rolled seamless steel pipe. The caliber of hot rolled steel pipe is larger than that of cold rolled seamless steel pipe, and the surface has obvious scales or red rust. Generally speaking, the surface finish of cold rolled pipe is much better than that of hot-rolled pipe.

Choose Cold Drawn or Hot Rolled Tube?

If you are struggling to choose cold drawn steel pipe or hot rolled steel pipe. Wanzhi Steel, as a leading steel pipe manufacturer, would like to offer you some tips.

1. Choose According to Actual Needs

If your project does not require high dimensional requirements, you can choose hot rolled steel tubes. On the contrary, if the requirement for precision is high, then cold drawn steel tubes will be your best choice.

2. Choose Based on Budget

Obviously, the price of cold-drawn tubes is higher than that of hot-rolled tubes. If you plan for a lower budget, you can choose hot rolled pipe to save your money. But remember don’t be greedy for a small price to avoid being cheated.

3. Consult with Professionals

If you still can’t decide, you can consult with a professional, such as Wanzhi Steel. As a steel pipe manufacturer with 17 years of experience in the industry, we are qualified to provide you with the right solution for your project.
